Formulating Gen-Z-targeted product marketing strategies to grow Technics' brand resonance in the premium audio market.

Overview

As part of a semester-long Ascend Consulting engagement with Panasonic’s Technics audio brand, I worked on a research-driven team formulating Gen-Z-targeted product marketing strategies for the EAH-AZ80 flagship earbuds. Technics wanted to raise its brand value among Gen-Z, an audience whose media habits and purchase psychology looked very different from its traditional audiophile base.

Approach

We built a full picture of the Gen-Z audio buyer: a competitive teardown of Sony and Bose’s positioning and campaigns, a product-differentiation scorecard benchmarking the EAH-AZ80 against the Sony WF-1000XM5, Bose QuietComfort Earbuds, and AirPods Pro Gen 2, and primary research (150+ survey responses plus focus group interviews) on Gen-Z’s media consumption, purchasing preferences, and willingness-to-pay. The research surfaced a tension: Gen-Z is highly active on TikTok (68%), Instagram (76%), and YouTube (88%), and skews toward lower-to-medium price points, which conflicts directly with Technics’s high-tier pricing strategy.

Strategies Designed

Technics Lab Pop-Up — a listening-bar-style pop-up in high-traffic LA/NY neighborhoods, with Sonic Experts guiding visitors through the product.

Lifestyle Integration Partnership — “Premium Sound in Every Space,” pairing Technics with airline first/business class and hotel partners.

Micro-Influencer Marketing — trading reach for engagement, favoring niche micro-influencers (6% engagement) over mega-influencers (2%).

#PanasonicPowerSessions Challenge — an influencer-led, short-form fitness challenge with curated playlists and weekly prizes.

Ticketmaster Giveaway Partnership — a co-branded giveaway pairing EAH-AZ80s with concert tickets to drive exposure and consideration.

SEO & Social Content Optimization — organic-search and platform-native content targeting Gen-Z’s TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube habits.

Outcome

The strategies drove 60,000+ impressions within a 2-month window and were projected to grow Gen-Z-driven sales by 15%. Our closest real-world precedent, a comparable audio-brand travel partnership, generated 3.77M impressions, a 4.31% organic engagement rate, and 23K+ direct conversions, giving Technics a credible benchmark for the Lifestyle Integration Partnership strategy specifically.

Reflection

The biggest surprise was the gap between Technics’ premium positioning and Gen-Z’s price sensitivity. Rather than discounting the brand, the strategies that tested best translated premium quality into tangible, shareable experiences, a pop-up you can visit, a playlist you can post, a challenge you can join, instead of asking Gen-Z to buy into prestige on faith alone.
