Co-founded and built the MVP for a habit-tracking app that pays users in local-business coupons for walking.

Overview
MoveMeant is a habit-building startup I co-founded and led as CTO through UC Berkeley’s ENGIN 183D venture program: an app that pays people in local-business coupons for walking, turning a Gen-Z sedentary-lifestyle problem into foot traffic for small businesses.
Problem
72% of Gen-Z doesn’t complete an hour of daily activity, putting them at 2x the risk of heart disease and diabetes, while 20% of small businesses fail within their first year, contributing to an estimated $400B in lost revenue in 2024. We built MoveMeant to solve both at once: users earn real coupons from local businesses by hitting step goals, and businesses get foot traffic plus detailed visit analytics in return.
Product
Find Local Businesses — browse nearby coupon offers with a step-count unlock, so the reward is visible before you start walking.

See Business Details — a business profile shows the real coupon, the route to get there, and social proof from friends who already grabbed the deal.

Take Steps Toward Your Goal — a live walking tracker maps the route, counts steps in real time, and shows exactly how close you are to unlocking the reward.

Earn Coupons for Walking — hitting the goal unlocks a real, scannable coupon at checkout, ready to redeem the next time you’re at that business.

Build a Habit — streaks, levels, and a history of local businesses visited turn a single walk into a recurring habit worth coming back to.

Share With Friends — gift a coupon to one friend to bring them into the habit loop too, turning a solo walk into something social.

Traction
Before I graduated off the team, MoveMeant had built a waitlist of 100+ individual users and 10+ local businesses, with 58% of surveyed respondents rating coupon incentives from local businesses as highly interesting. Our business model paired a monthly consumer subscription with a $1.99/month business subscription covering market analytics, advertising, and user research access.
Outcome
As CTO, I built the MVP end-to-end: a frontend for step tracking and coupon redemption paired with a SQL backend for managing user, business, and transaction data, drawing interest from 100+ users and 5+ businesses ahead of our $150,000 raise ask.
Reflection
Co-founding MoveMeant was my first time owning the technical side of a 0→1 product while also having to justify every build decision in terms a non-technical investor could care about. It reframed how I think about engineering trade-offs: the right architecture isn’t the most impressive one, it’s the one that gets a testable product in front of real users and businesses fastest.
